Boone County Firefighters Extinguish Blaze in Rocheport
Gale Blomenkamp, Division Chief/PIO - Monday, February 01, 2010
Boone County Fire District Firefighters responded to a reported structure fire last night at 11:21 p.m. in the 200 block of Clark Street in Rocheport. The initial 911 caller stated there were flames visible on the exterior wall of the residence and near the roof.
When firefighters on Engine 201 arrived on the scene, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from side 4 of the structure. Arriving firefighters were able to knock down the fire using a transitional attack. Crews immediately made entry into the residence and were able to pull ceiling in the living room and attack the attic fire from below. The fire was fully extinguished in less than 45 minutes. The two adult occupants and two children escaped the fire uninjured.
Fire Investigators determined the point of origin was near a flu pipe originating from the wood burning stove in the living room. This living room was an addition to the original structure which was built in the early 1900’s. The occupant, Mr. Cooper, stated that he was awake in the living room when he noticed a flicker outside the living room window. When he went to investigate what it was, he discovered that the side of his house was on fire and he immediately got everyone out. Damage estimates are $50,000.00
After the fire was contained, firefighters continued overhaul by pulling additional ceiling and checking for extension. The attic area and structural members of the roof sustained heavy fire damage with some of the rafters burned completely through. Firefighters also performed salvage operations and assisted the occupants in moving most of the contents out of the residence prior to overhaul operations.
Boone County Fire District responded with Engine 201, Engine 901, Squad 104 and Air 15 with 17 firefighters. Cooper County Fire responded with a tanker and four firefighters. Firefighters were on the scene for 2.5 hours.
